Tiling and slating a roof involves covering the roof structure with either tiles or slates to provide waterproofing and protection from the elements.
Tiling: Roof tiles are typically made from clay, concrete, or other materials. They are installed in overlapping rows, with each tile slightly overlapping the one below it to prevent water penetration. Tiles are usually heavier than slates and often require a sturdy roof frame.
Slating: Slates are thin, flat pieces of stone (often natural slate), which are also laid in overlapping rows. Slates are lighter and more durable than tiles, and they are commonly used for their aesthetic appeal and longevity. Proper fixing with nails or hooks is necessary to secure the slates against wind and weather.
Both processes require careful alignment and installation to ensure the roof is fully sealed and weatherproof.
Flat roofing involves creating a roof with little to no pitch, using Resitrix. It is designed for durability and waterproofing, often used in commercial buildings or modern homes.
Warm Deck Roof: In a warm deck roof, the insulation is placed above the roof deck, just below the vapour barrier. This creates a continuous thermal barrier, keeping the roof space warm and reducing the risk of condensation. It's the most common type of flat roof for modern buildings due to its energy efficiency.
Cold Deck Roof: In a cold deck roof, the insulation is placed below the roof deck, leaving the roof space uninsulated. This allows for more ventilation in the roof space, but it can lead to condensation issues if not properly ventilated.
Lead welding on a roof is a technique used to join pieces of lead sheet together to create a strong, waterproof seal. This process involves heating the lead to its melting point and then fusing the edges of the sheets using a special welding rod and tools. It is commonly used for repairing or creating flashings, joints, or custom roof details where lead sheets need to be seamlessly joined. Lead welding provides a durable and long-lasting solution to prevent leaks and ensure the integrity of roof features like valleys, chimneys, and parapets.
Velux window installation involves fitting a roof window, designed for pitched and flat roofs, to bring natural light and ventilation into a desired space. Velux windows come in varying sizes and opening options, such as manual opening or electric. Electric can either be hard wired into the property, or solar powered. As a certified Velux installer we can advise you on the most suitable product for your needs.
